Which Auto Focus Camera Took These Shots?

Which auto focus camera took these shots?? The development of camera technogly has gone through the roof and we are benefiting from the advances in this area. One of the biggest advances in camera technologies is found in the auto focus systems. They are getting quicker, faster and delivering amazing results.

Canon is what I shoot with so were these images shot with Canon’s R3, R5, R6 or the latest release of the R7 in the mirrorless range?

Canon have made massive advancements in this area and it has given photographers a higher success rate in capturing wildlife and sporting shots. Years gone by you had to really know your craft to be able to capture those special moments.

Even with the new technologies you still need to understand your settings so you can get the best out of the subject that you are shooting with.Having auto tracking on the subject as it continually focus’s on the subject is simply stunning.

This may surprise you, these images were not taken with any of the cameras mentioned above. The technogly that took these images is old as things date so quickly in this field. The camera that took these images has no little square tracking the subject .In these pictures that were taken , the  auto focus on the camera was switch off.

The bird in these pictures is the African Drongo and it is lightning quick. The pictures freeze the moment and with no auto focus  so how were these images taken.

This was a series of shots taken in Africa running while running the African Tour there. We were waiting for a massive bull elephant to arrive at the water hole. I noticed the bird coming and going. If you study the behaviour of birds you’ll find many are very repetitive and keep coming back to the same sot over and over again.

I asked the question to the crew,’What do you do when your auto focus function breaks down or if you are not fast enough to track the bird.

This bird was coming back to the same branch and you can tell it is a favourite spot due to the bird droppings on the branch. I got the crew to manually focus of the branch where the bird was landing. They had to turn off the auto function on their cameras to do this exercise. Then without looking through your camera, keeping your eyes on the bird, all the crew had to do was press the shutter as the bird was coming in.They rested their camera on the window ledge of the vehicle and the rest is history. The ledge of the vehicle acted as a stable tripod and jumpers were placed under the cameras to give some sort of cushion effect.

Knowing your craft and knowing how to use the camera without all of the mods ands cons, will come into its own down the track. This bird is lightning fast and in this case, the best way to capture it was to manually focus on the branch and press the shutter as it came in to land. These images were taken on the Canon 7d mark 2. The frame rate was set to 10 frames a second.

This camera doesn’t have the latest focusing technology and it just goes to show you can still taken wonderful images without having the best gear. The strength of any image will always lay with the photographers ability to take the picture. 🙂
