Why Things Of The Past?

Why things fo the past is an emotive subject. For as long as I can remember I have always been drawn to subjects that reflect the past. Where did this come from? My dear grand parents whom I loved so much had a large farm. On that farm it was like being in the wild places an as a young boy from the age of 5 onwards, this place seemed larger than life. On the farm there was a shearing shed and an awesome rustic old car. I loved this old car as it use to be my grandparents car and since that, things old and rustic I have always been drawn too.

The pictures here are not from the farm and sadly I don’t have any pictures of the farm as my parents at the time, were not into taking pictures to record history as you go along. Although there are no images from that time , the images in my head and the memories are as vivid today as they were back then.

I have a large library of all things rustic that I have photographed over the years. These images were taken over 15 years ago and permission was given at the time to photograph them. Why things of the past is a great photographic subject to photograph.

When you take a picture and it doesn’t matter if you are a professional, or a hobbyist, every time you press the shutter you are recording history. At the time you may not think much about it . As time moves on and the years slip by, you will see the importance of the images that you have taken in the past.

I could have presented these images in color or black and white but have chosen to give the sepia old worldly look to add a sense of time to this short blog.

When press the shutter on the  things that are old and rustic it’s history. These subjects are often just left to fade away in fields etc, I always wonder about the life of the object.Who drove the car and at one point in time it would have been that persons pride and joy  and would have been the talk of the community.

I often wonder what was the reason that the people just got up and left their car, truck or van etc What was the last day that they parked it where it was and walked away from it. All these crazy question I often reflect upon. One will never know the reason as to why but it never stops me from wondering.

I’ve even come across a few old rustic cars and old trucks that had keys in the ignition. Rusted in they were.

No matter where you are, remember when you take that picture it is history that you have captured .

There have been many old rustic subjects that I have photographed over the years that are totally gone.It could be an old ruin that has finally fallen down for the last time, an old windmill fallen over or an  the old rustic car that was sold of for scrap metal to clean the place up.

Whatever the reason, when you press the shutter , its history being capture by yourself.

I would have loved to have taken the picture of my grandparents old rustic car but you don’t think of those things when you were so young. It was an adventure to be there. Often I was sit on the spring based seat of the car and pretend to driving the old car. In that car as a young boy I had so many adventures in it and it provided so many wonderful memories.

There photography is self taught and they enjoy capturing what is before them and sharing that with the wider community. What delight them is being able to show aspects of photography that people may not have thought of before. They like encourage people to look at subjects in a way that they may never have thought of.To encourage people to learn to photograph subjects that may have been out of their comfort zone.To encourage people to see and learn how to see the detail in all of the subjects that they photograph.Photography is so rewarding as you get an opportunity to freeze that moment in time to marvel the wonderful acts of nature and the material world.Every subject has its own delights and beauty and they love it when people discover that and embrace it.
