Time is something that most of us struggle with. We live in a society that is lived at a such fast pace and the thing that amazes me, we are told all the new technology that is at our finger tips is there to make life easier, to free us up, to make things easier and to give a better standard of living, to be one step ahead of the pack.
Nothing could be further from the truth. It seems the more technology we have been given, the more we become enslaved to it and to the lifestyle it creates .We lose our sense of time, or time takes on a completely different meaning. We lose to ability to control time, to make the decisions that we need to make, rather we tend to be in a rush to make deadlines and to make ends meet.We are enslaved to the negative aspects of time as I see it.
Many times I have been waiting in a line at the supermarket, simple, not a life and death situation and if the check out person has been slowed up for various reasons, I have noticed people in line getting annoyed, agitated because they are all wanting to be a particular place and a certain time. They tend to take it out of the check out person as if it is their fault, or that they are meaning to make everyone wait.Does that make sense? Lets face it, most of us don’t like bringing confrontation upon ourselves, so the poor check out person who seems to be in the firing line is in reality, blameless.
Time is always at a premium in our lives and the sad thing is we are becoming a race, a generation where we have lost the skill, or the art of just simply sit still to see what is around us.
There may be others but I think the two professions where people understand the stillness of time, the waiting game, not being anxious, having the patience to wait would be landscape photographers and people who love fishing. Both are different occupations but in order to move forward in it, you have no choice but to have the patience to wait. Things we do while we wait maybe reflect, ponder, make love ( if you are with your partner), read a book, play board games, count the ants or simply sit and do nothing to wait for the landscape to present itself in the way you want to take it or to wait for that pending fish to be lured to your hook.
When was the last time you sat for 12 hours and waited and waited with the right attitude?
Many have lost that ability as we have been so conditioned to be there, conquer, move on to the next situation.
I’m often asked , how do you get your shots? The answer to that question could be answered in a hundred different ways.
In this series of shorts taken in Canyon de Chelly in the USA, all of these images were taken on the same day. When I arrived at this stunning spot I fell in love with it straight away. During this day, it started off as totally blue skies, no clouds and for those who know me, clouds are what I adore so much and I have a love affair with the awesome clouds that are about us on almost a daily basis.
When you look at the shadow of Spider Rock on the ground, it will be in a different place each time, showing time moving.
So what went through my mind during this day?
I felt so privilege to have been able to spend a day here and with the shots that I was able to capture, this became an equal highlight of my time in America in that year.
I sat on the rock, my butt at times was going numb so I would have to get up and walk around every hour for about 10 minutes in order to be able to feel it again hahaha
Blue skies turn into amazing awesome skies, which turned into dark angry clouds, which turned into rain, lightning and then back to awesomeskies at the end of the day. What I saw in that time was simply stunning.I could have never asked for a more perfect day or this awe inspiring subject.
So what went through my head during that time. If I’m going to be honest, wishing I had someone to share this experience with who was on the same level as to me in how I approach life because I felt very selfish that I was the only one in sharing what was taking place before my eyes as this time period. To have someone to hug, cuddle and to lay, sit, stand and marvel at what was happening before us. That’s not the case, life is life as I know it at the moment, but that is what went through my mind.
It was a thought that kept coming back to me time and time again.
I felt so blessed and God was just so good to me for me to be able to experience all of this in a single 10 hours period.
During this time, I saw many people come and go. All but a few would stay 10 minutes and then move on.
It does one good to be able to sit, not move from the spot, to be able to be disciplined enough to stay put and take in all that is happening around you.
The only other season that I would like to be able to capture Spider Rock is when there is snow but somehow I don’t think that will happen much as snow means cold haha and I’m not a great fan of the cold.
In the context of time, life is short, go and enjoy the things that give you joy and happiness. Don’t be stubborn to stop yourself from enjoying the gentle pleasures of life and to be able to share it with someone.
We are made as social beings no matter how much you want to fight against it. If we were not social beings, none of us would be here right now, nor would you be reading this.
So many times we can put the barricades up and we will come up with all the reasons as to why we can’t share with another when we have been on our own for a period of time and I think when you boiled it down it’s because there are times when we live in fear of the unknown, or in fear of others in how they will react to what you do. Have faith and trust in who you are, in the things that you want to do and to achieve in life.
Dare to be different and sit still for the day and see what passes your way. Slow time down for a day and demonstrate to time that you are in control of time and not time in control of you as so often is the case.
When you read my words, I do respect that you may strongly disagree and that’s fine, these are my thoughts, ,my outlook in life and I never assume that the read agrees with what I write and nor do I ask them to. As I have mentioned, these are my thoughts and a reflection of where I am with life in the present.
