Autumn A Splash of Color
Autumn A Splash of Color is a stunning time of the year for not just photographers, but for most. The reason for this is the splash of color that Autumn presents itself to us. It’s one of those seasons that is our favorite by far and yet, this is the shortest of all of the seasons when the color is there to photograph.
You have summer on one end that is squeezing from one direction and then there is winter pushing from the other side. Recently Vicki and myself spent three weeks at Mount Lofty Botanical Gardens in Adelaide South Australia and it was such a rewarding time.
Photographing Mount Lofty Botanical Gardens was such a thrill. There is something special when walking between the autumn leaves.
When photographing the autumn leaves, there is one thing that we do all the time and it is something that we teach in our workshops and that is, shoot knowing that you are going to crop the image.
If you can visulise your shot before you actually take the picture then you are one step ahead of most people. We encourage our quests to be able to visualize the shot before you actually take it. To have the ability to be able to see the shot that you are going to take knowing that you are going to crop it.
The above image was taken on our Canon 6D amrk1. The lens that was used here was the 16-35 2.8 lens, mark 1. This image has been cropped . F stop f11. We love the 16.35mm 2.8 lens, it is our favourite lens by far and we always take images with this lens knowing that we are going to crop it.
The other lens that we love working is the 70-200mmf4 lens. We love using this lens with the autumn leaves as this compresses the shot and this enables us to use a shallow depth of field where you blur the background and therefore you are drawn to the main subject.Below is an example of that.
When photographing the leaves, we also tend to look for some awesome little insects that are going about there daily business and below is a photo that shows that. This was taken with the 70-200mm and the shot has been compressed.
Autumn a Splash of color also provides you with a contrast of color and the image below shows this and this was taken on the 16-35mm 2.8. This is the same shot as above but the image was taken on a different lens, this gives you a totally different perspective on it.Here we have come in as close as we can so the leaves stand out more with the perspective that this lens does.
It’s not just the obvious that stands out that you can photography but there is another dimension to autumn, a splash of color and below are two picture that gives you a clue .When I return, I’ll talk about that.
